Halloween. A holiday hated by many, loved by few. I'm one of the few. I'm a creative who wishes I could dress in a costume everyday and the older I get, the more I feel like this will be my future.
Each year, we are plagued by repeat outfits. I encourage you to do whatever you want, but the tag line of this blog is "perspective from a gal who loves sparkles and vegetables" so I feel obligated to share my opinion.
Here's the list of costumes I personally think we should retire:
- School Girl
- Wayne and Garth
- Playboy Bunny - unless you get a vintage costume
- Prison Inmate
- Troll Dolls
- "White Trash"
- I hate to say it, but sushi is getting old (except for pets)
- Anything Starbucks related
- Audrey Hepburn
- Hocus Pocus - there I said it
- Victoria Secret Model
- Legends of the Hidden Temple
- Banana Costume
I'm being a Disco Ball [again], but here are a few things I would be if I didn't already have my outfit. And because I love you, I made a Pinterest Board for more inspiration.
Fun fact: I had a unicorn birthday cake every year until I was 9. I shed my belief in Santa, the Easter Bunny and the Toothfairy in the 1st Grade, but I was 1000% positive unicorns were real..
Unicorns were all the rage this year so I'm guessing this will be super popular costume. I like to be unique, but I still think it's worth it because it would be so much fun to make.
Get Ravey with it. I think they're fun, but they also kind of remind me of something you'd wear to prancercise..
A lot of options here. You can make this as conservative or wild as you'd like.
BE A FUN FRUIT
I'd go for Pineapple or Watermelon. I also have a major obsession with tutus so I'd probably translate something like this into an adult version.
LADY GAGA - AN OLDIE BUT A GOODIE
I don't feel like I really need to sell this one, but it's possible not everyone lives for Lady Gaga like I do.
I love sparkles and theatrics so I would probably go for Old School Gaga, but I think her new look could be fun too.
PICK A DECADE, BUT YOU HAVE TO REALLY COMMIT
In my opinion, authentic decade costumes always have the best execution. Metallics are everywhere right now so I'd channel my inner 70's and pick up a gold dress that I could wear outside of Halloween too.
WITCH FROM AMERICAN HORROR STORY - THE COVEN
The Coven just might be my favorite season of American Horror Story. If you and your friends don't know what to be this year, this could be a great option. Chances are you can find something in your closet.
DRESS LIKE YOUR BEST FRIEND AND SAY NOTHING
One year my entire office dressed like a coworker. We had fake soul patches and he didn't notice until after lunch. It was hilarious.
ALEXIA WHEATON - WISH UPON A STAR
To say I love "Wish Upon a Star" is an understatement and I'd venture to say it probably makes my Top 5 Favorite Movies of all time. It's amazing and I shaved my legs everyday - for a couple days - when this movie first came out.
I LIVE for this purple skirt.
The more I think about about this, the more I want to change my costume. If you do this, PLEASE tag me. I need to see your outfit.
We'll end with my vote for the Best Costume of 2016. Kylie Jenner you are a Queen for pulling this off. Sigh, I'll forever love Christina Aguilara's "dirty phase".
